The teaching methods used were appropriate to the objectives
The instructor used technology effectively
Review the sequence of how all living creatures stay alive by gathering sensory input, interpreting the data, and creating physiological and physical actions to stay alive.
When stresses overwhelm a person’s coping capacity, the body responds with threat physiology, which mobilizes resources to survive. When this state is sustained, chronic disease is the outcome.
Discuss how physical therapy can affect all aspects of chronic pain - the environment, education, the nervous system, and the structural components
The instructor used technology effectively
Participants will be able to describe phylogenetic hierarchy of the autonomic states and how these states this impact on pain
Participants will understand neuroanatomical link between the neural regulation of the structures involved in the social engagement system and the mitigation of pain.
Describe how physical therapists can lower threat why it is important.
The instructor used technology effectively
Discuss how the branches of the autonomic nervous system relate to specific symptoms of mental disorders
Discuss the role of the physical therapist in lowering the stress repsonse with somatic tools and lower the reactivityn of the autonomic nervous system and the immune system
Discuss non-invasive procedures to quantitate the function and dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system
The instructor used technology effectively
Discuss the need to integrate our combined knowledge to calm the nervous system and lower threat physiology.
The instructor used technology effectively
To explain the increases in type 2 diabetes and other chronic metabolic diseases
To explain the increases in addiction, depression, inattention, anxiety, and hate in order to enhance the PT's understanding of the root causes of a patient's symptoms
To explain the interaction of the reward, contentment, and stress-fear-memory systems to lead to both pathologies
The instructor used technology effectively
Overview the set of neural regions involved in physical pain
Provide information on the neural regions activated by social rejection and aide the physical therapist in creating a healing atmosphere.
Illustrate the consequences of a shared neural circuitry underlying physical and social pain
The instructor used technology effectively
Discuss the impact of social issues in creating threat physicolgy. Mental pain is more impactful than physical pain.
The instructor used technology effectively
Describe the basic physiology of threat to allow the physical therapists to adopt a "total body" approach to care.
Understand the components of threat load
Understand the role of threat in pain, illness and disease
The instructor used technology effectively
Explain the concept of vagal withdrawal to enable physical therapists address it during care.
Understand and explain metrics related to heart rate variability
Develop therapeutic strategies that are informed by the knowledge of the autonomic nervous system.
The instructor used technology effectively
Explore in more depth how threat physiology creates so many different symptoms and the key is addressing the root cause instead of the symptoms.
The instructor used technology effectively
Chronic pain is moderated by social interactions - the interaction with the physical therapist is impactful as the interactions have many facets, including touching the patient.
The neuropeptide molecule, oxytocin plays a critical role in social behavior, perceptions of safety (versus threat) and is an anti-inflammatory
Understanding the evolution and physiology of social safety and oxytocin may help to explain the importance of both in preventing or overcoming chronic pain
The instructor used technology effectively
Importance of Early Diagnosis of Inflammatory Conditions (IC). Present the clinical picture to the physical therapists as they are the most likley to make the correct diagnosis.
Reasons Patients & Providers Refer to Rheumatologists and Other conditions that NEED TO BE Referred
Your co-regulation strategies to improve IC outcomes
The instructor used technology effectively
Discuss the links between social connection and inflammation. Effective treatments can be developed.
The instructor used technology effectively
List the six key processes in the psychological flexibility model
Give an example of at least one intervention method that might impact each of the psychological flexibility processes
Describe the paradox of mental control as it applied to chronic pain. Physical therapy can connect mental and physical sensations and stimulate neuroplastic changes in the brain.
The instructor used technology effectively
Understand the human neuroscientific evidence linking alterations in brain circuits to chronic pain
Learn about the multiple brain pathways that may be altered in different patients and how physical therapy can help change them.
Learn how models of the "predictive brain" place beliefs about pain a central position for determining the trajectory of pain, and how psychological approaches can treat chronic pain effectively by targeting these beliefs.
The instructor used technology effectively
Deepen the discussion about the role of menal pain being such a core aspect of chronic pain. It cannot be ignored.
The instructor used technology effectively
Participants will be able to describe how the brain predicts and generates our experiences.
Participants will be able to explain predictive coding in simple and compassionate ways to patients
Participants will be able to accurately assess patients for the diagnosis of non-structural pain syndromes - a critical skill for physical therapists.
The instructor used technology effectively
Describe the psychological and neurobiological processes driving primary pain,
Describe results from the recently completed trial of Pain Reprocessing Therapy
Describe the key principles and techniques of Pain Reprocessing Therapy and how the principles can be brought into the physical therapy setting.
The instructor used technology effectively
Discuss how the predictive model plays a role in the perception of safey and how PRT fits into this paradigm.
The instructor used technology effectively
Attendee will be able to describe attachment trauma and its impact on emotional functioning.
Attendee will be able to name 3 pathways of unconscious anxiety and physical therapist can apply somatic tools as part of the healihng process.
Attendee will be able to describe a process of assessing the role of unprocessed feelings on pain experiences and behavior
The instructor used technology effectively
To explain how mental control maintains the threat physiology of chronic pain. Physical therapy can be instrumental in allowing people to feel safe enough to let go of this need.
To identity the two physio-psychological states that maintain chronic pain
To apply a bottom-up skill called The 3Ns to minimize the threat response of the nervous system to promote pain recovery.
The instructor used technology effectively
Discuss the real physiological impact of emotional and mental pain.
The instructor used technology effectively
Connect chronic illness/pain/symptoms to a dysregulated Nervous System (NS) stuck in long term fight/flight/freeze, as a direct result of the presence of repressed emotions and the unconscious brain's perception that feeling these feelings would be a threat to survival. Physical therapy has a role in calming down this heightened state.
Explain that since the brain/NS perceive the repressed emotions as a greater "threat" than the physical manifestations occurring in the body (creating a diversion - what I like to call fake safety), that the physical manifestation will continue until there is awareness in the brain/NS that protection is no longer warranted.
Share through personal narrative and patient examples the way in which expressive writing, properly undertaken with safety and structure, can inform the brain/NS duo that feelings can be invited to rise without threat to survival, and in doing so the physical manifestations melt away - as the process which necessitated them in the first place has been resolved.
The instructor used technology effectively
Describe leading edge research that reveals how perception of environmental signals controls behavior and gene expression. Physical therapy has the potential to mold these perceptions.
Participants will describe how membrane protein perception complexes provide for the mind-body interface in controlling life.
To become aware that prenatal and perinatal experiences provide programmed perceptions, relegated to the subconscious mind, that shape an individual’s physiology and behavior.
The instructor used technology effectively
Summarize the role that mental threats have in the creation of disease states and present some ideas regarding potential solutions.
